A mini-split has two parts. A slim indoor unit mounts high on your wall. A compact outdoor compressor sits outside, usually on a concrete pad or wall bracket. A small conduit—about 3 inches wide—runs between them carrying refrigerant lines, a drain line, and power. That’s it. No ductwork. No major construction.

Each indoor unit has its own thermostat and remote control. Set the bedroom to 68°F while the living room stays at 72°F. You only condition the rooms you’re actually using. That built-in zoning is why mini-splits use 25–40% less energy than forced-air systems that heat or cool the entire house at once.

Multi-zone systems connect up to 5 indoor units to a single outdoor compressor. One unit in the master bedroom, one in the living room, one in the home office—all running independently. You control each room from a remote, a wall controller, or your phone via Wi-Fi.
